SEOUL, April 5 (Yonhap) -- Renault Group aims to expand its lineup, increase market share and accelerate electrification in South Korea, the French carmaker's Chairman Francois Provost has said.
Provost made the remarks during a press meeting in Seoul on Friday, saying the group has reached a point where it is ready to relaunch its expansion efforts beyond Europe, including in the Korean market.
He said Renault Korea Motors Co. will serve as a key manufacturing base capable of meeting both domestic demand and export needs under the group's broader "Future Ready" strategy, which targets global sales of at least 2 million vehicles by 2030 through electrification and lineup expansion.
In particular, Renault Korea's sole manufacturing facility in Busan, about 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul, has become a production hub for the group's D- and E-segment vehicles as well as all-electric models, he said.
Renault Group plans for electrified vehicles to account for all new models by 2030, with pure electric vehicles (EVs) making up 50 percent of annual production and hybrids comprising the remainder. Of the 22 new models planned by then, 16 will be electrified, the company said.
In line with this strategy, Provost said Renault Korea is reviewing the timeline and details for upgrading its Busan plant to produce EVs.
"Given that customers who have experienced EVs do not return to internal combustion engine vehicles, electric cars will become Renault's core business," he said.
To offer competitively priced EVs in South Korea, Renault plans to collaborate with local partners, including LG Energy Solution Ltd. and POSCO.
In the January-March period, Renault Korea's sales fell 8.5 percent from a year earlier to 16,620 units due to weak domestic demand.
