SEOUL, March 19 (Yonhap) -- Lisa Su, chief executive officer (CEO) of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Inc., met with officials from the South Korean government, Samsung Electronics Co. and Upstage on Thursday, as the U.S. tech giant aims to step up artificial intelligence (AI) partnerships in the region.
Su, who has been on a two-day visit to South Korea since Wednesday, met with Im Moon-young, vice chair of the National AI Strategy Committee, and Ha Jung-woo, presidential secretary for AI policy and future planning, discussing potential cooperation in the AI industry.
During the meeting, South Korean officials introduced Seoul's policies aimed at making Asia's fourth-largest economy one of the world's top three AI powerhouses, while discussing ways to create synergies between Korean companies and AMD in the AI sector, according to the committee.
The government and AMD also held discussions on how to bolster South Korea's global competitiveness in the AI industry, exploring various ways for cooperation, including joint research and development (R&D) projects.
Seoul officials and AMD vowed to continue mutually beneficial cooperation to establish an open and global AI ecosystem, the committee added.

AMD and Upstage have been strategic partners since AMD joined Upstage's 62 billion-won (US$41.3 million) Series B bridge investment last year.
Under the expanded collaboration, Upstage will deploy AMD's Instinct MI355 accelerators based on a multiphase road map over the next year, leveraging the graphics processing units (GPUs) to enhance its large language models (LLMs) and document processing engines.
The deployment will also support the development of a sovereign AI model as part of the South Korean government-led AI foundation model project. Upstage has advanced to the second round of the project, alongside SK Telecom Co. and LG AI Research.
Through the partnership, AMD and Upstage aim to strengthen South Korea's domestic AI ecosystem while diversifying the nation's sovereign AI infrastructure, the companies said.
Upstage said the collaboration, powered by AMD's GPU, is expected to play a key role in advancing its LLMs and building the country's sovereign AI model.
"Pairing that with domestic infrastructure gives us the foundation to make Korea a genuinely competitive force in global AI," Kim said.
AMD CEO Su said she has chosen Upstage as its partner as the startup is at the forefront of AI innovation in South Korea.
"This collaboration brings together AMD Instinct GPUs and the ROCm open software with Upstage's expertise to advance Korea's sovereign AI capabilities, and deliver the performance, efficiency and open ecosystem needed to accelerate AI innovation," she said.

On Wednesday, Su met with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong amid the U.S. company's push to bolster ties in the AI chip industry.
The meeting between Su and Lee came after Samsung Electronics announced Wednesday that it had signed an agreement with AMD to supply its latest high bandwidth memory (HBM) chips for AMD's next-generation AI accelerators.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU), Samsung Electronics has been designated as a preferred supplier of HBM4 for AMD's Instinct MI455X, its latest graphics processing unit (GPU) for AI data centers.
