The first ICAIL conference was held in Boston, MA in 1987. Since then, the conference has been hosted in a variety of cities around the world, including: Vancouver (1989), Oxford (1991), Amsterdam (1993), Maryland (1995), Melbourne (1997), Oslo (1999), St. Louis (2001), Edinburgh (2003), Bologna (2005), Stanford (2007), Barcelona (2009), Pittsburgh (2011), Rome (2013), San Diego (2015), London (2017), Montreal (2019), São Paulo (2021 – held entirely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic), Braga (2023 – hybrid format), Chicago (2025 – hybrid format), and most recently Singapore, which will host ICAIL2026. Who Can Apply Bids are welcome from individuals or groups affiliated with institutions engaged in AI and Law research, typically universities or research centers. The IAAIL Executive Committee expresses a strong preference for ICAIL 2027 to be held in June 2027. Individuals or groups interested in hosting the 2027 conference should notify the IAAIL Executive Committee by September 30, 2025 . If additional time is required to prepare your bid, please indicate how much time is needed. Expressions of interest to host ICAIL 2028 are also welcome and will be considered by the IAAIL Executive Committee. Initial Bid Requirements The initial proposal should address as many as possible of the following points: 1. Attach the scientific CV of the proposed Local Chair, including: URL of professional homepage Current professional position Highest degree and year awarded Three most relevant roles (e.g., program chair, committee member) Link to publication record Institutional affiliation and full address (city, state, country) 2. Proposed Dates ICAIL typically takes place in the first or second week of June . Indicate whether this timeframe is feasible for you, and describe what weather conditions are expected at that time. 3. Please provide details on the venue’s suitability for this format, including the possibility of having remote connection and a hybrid modality. 4. Sponsorship Opportunities While ICAIL is primarily funded through registration fees, sponsorship from local organizations or industry partners is highly encouraged and appreciated. Specifically, in recent years, the conference has offered travel grants to PhD candidates and early-career scholars. The Local Chair will be required to co-sign documents related to the in-coop procedure. While the Local Chair and the Local Organization team are not responsible for creating the proceedings (this is the task of the Program Chair), they are welcome to support the Program Chair in the publication process, by providing any information ACM requires on the basis of their policies.
