Applied Sociolinguistic AI for Community Development (ASA-CD): A New Scientific Paradigm for Linguistically-Grounded Social Intervention

arXiv:2602.21217v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: This paper establishes Applied Sociolinguistic AI for Community Development (ASA-CD) as a novel scientific paradigm for addressing community challenges through linguistically grounded, AI-enabled intervention. ASA-CD introduces three key contributions: (1) linguistic biomarkers as computational indicators of discursive fragmentation; (2) development-aligned natural language processing (NLP), an AI optimisation paradigm prioritising collective outcomes; and (3) a standardised five-phase protocol for discursive intervention. A proof-of-concept study, incorporating real-world and synthetic corpora, demonstrates systematic associations between exclusionary language and negative sentiment and simulates intervention-based improvements. ASA-CD provides a unified methodological, ethical and empirical framework for scalable, value-aligned AI in the service of community empowerment.

Executive Summary

The article introduces Applied Sociolinguistic AI for Community Development (ASA-CD), a novel scientific paradigm that leverages AI and sociolinguistics to address community challenges. ASA-CD offers a unified framework for linguistically grounded social intervention, featuring linguistic biomarkers, development-aligned NLP, and a standardized five-phase protocol. A proof-of-concept study demonstrates the effectiveness of ASA-CD in identifying exclusionary language and simulating intervention-based improvements. This paradigm has the potential to provide scalable, value-aligned AI solutions for community empowerment.

Key Points

  • Introduction of ASA-CD as a novel scientific paradigm
  • Development of linguistic biomarkers and development-aligned NLP
  • Standardized five-phase protocol for discursive intervention

Merits

Interdisciplinary Approach

The integration of sociolinguistics and AI provides a comprehensive framework for addressing community challenges.

Scalability

ASA-CD offers a scalable solution for community empowerment, enabling widespread adoption and impact.

Demerits

Dependence on Data Quality

The effectiveness of ASA-CD relies heavily on the quality and availability of linguistic data, which can be a limitation in certain contexts.

Ethical Considerations

The use of AI in social intervention raises ethical concerns, such as bias and privacy, which must be carefully addressed.

Expert Commentary

The introduction of ASA-CD represents a significant advancement in the field of sociolinguistics and AI. By providing a unified framework for linguistically grounded social intervention, ASA-CD has the potential to address complex community challenges in a scalable and effective manner. However, it is essential to carefully consider the ethical implications of ASA-CD and ensure that its development and deployment prioritize transparency, accountability, and social responsibility. Further research is needed to fully explore the possibilities and limitations of ASA-CD, but its potential to drive positive social change is undeniable.

Recommendations

  • Further research should be conducted to refine and expand the ASA-CD framework, particularly in diverse linguistic and cultural contexts.
  • Policymakers and practitioners should be engaged in the development and deployment of ASA-CD to ensure its effective and responsible application.
